Asset Management Jobs
Asset managers help their clients select the right investments to hold. Asset management includes fund management, that is, selecting the right investments for a fund where a number of investors are involved. This might be a pension fund, building up retirement savings, or a more general fund aimed at private individuals to enable them to invest in suitable Chinese equities, for example.
As well as selecting investments, within asset management there are a range of supporting roles, from people who gather information about investment products and compile reports, to customer-facing investment experts, responsible for delivering news of the fund's progress and winning new business.
Roles within Asset Management
The fund manager is a senior financial professional who is responsible for managing one or more investment funds. Working within pre-agreed guidelines, they try to select the right investments to reap maximum benefits for the fund owners.
A product manager will have specialist knowledge about a particular type of investment vehicle, and will be responsible for developing and promoting a suitable range of products within the asset management firm.
Research analysts help the fund managers make decisions, by providing information and reports on the markets. This is a more junior position, with employers usually require a minimum 2:1 level degree in business, economics or a mathematical qualification.
Those who prefer people to numbers may be happier in a sales and client services role. In this position you would be working with the client to understand their requirements, managing the relationship, and winning new business for the asset management firm.
Entry And Progression
Even highly qualified graduates find securing a junior position difficult. Internships and relevant experience will help applicants to entry-level positions. Progress is made through performing well, keeping up-to-date with industry news and developments, and pursuing relevant qualifications.
