What Is Credit Risk?
Whenever a bank lends money, there is a risk that some or all of the interest and the principal amount will be lost if the borrower fails to honour his obligations. This is credit risk.
Credit risk experts in banks not only deal with the risk associated with each individual loan, but also in more senior positions, take an overview of the bank's overall risk exposure.
At the most junior level credit analysts or credit officers review applications made to the bank for credit, and make an assessment of the risk associated with that loan. Reports will be made about the financial standing of the applicant client, including an assessment of the current assets and liabilities, and past credit history.
All credit decisions must be made in accordance with the bank's own guidelines, which will take into account the relevant rules and regulations that apply in the country in which they are operating.
Credit risk roles also analyse and prepare reports for the senior management and the Board about the overall credit risk faced by the organization. This tends to involve lots of statistical analysis and keeping pace with developing international expectations that are generated at the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland and known as Basel I, II and III.
Credit Job Titles
There is no formal hierarchy of credit professionals. Job titles usually contain some reference to credit, than an indicator of the person's seniority level, such as 'credit officer', 'credit risk manager' or 'vice president, credit'.
Career Progression
As seniority increases an individual can be responsible for the risk analysis associated with larger loans, or they may take responsibility for a more junior team or risk analysts. A senior credit risk analyst may have their own caseload of high value applications to assess, but also manage a team of more junior analysts, who may need to refer to the senior analyst for guidance and support.
