Debt / Fixed Income
The booming finance sector in Hong Kong has created dozens of jobs related to debt financing and fixed income products.
Fixed Income Markets
Fixed income in the financial sector broadly refers to the market for bonds issued by companies and governments to raise money.
A bond is a loan made by the bondholder to the bond issuer. In return for the loan, the issuer promises to pay the bondholder the full value of the initial loan amount (the principal), at some designated future date, plus regular interim interest payments, known as coupons. The term 'fixed income' relates to the fixed coupon payments made to the bondholder, by the issuer, at regular intervals.
It is not unusual to find that, by the time the bond is repaid, the bondholder is not the original purchaser. Instead the bond may have changed hands several times, as, like equities, they can be traded.
Investment banks work with the client needing to borrow money to develop a bond product, arrange its issue and bring it to market.
