Investment banking is the broad term for organisations that help their clients raise capital, as well as coming up with strategic ideas for other firms that their client might want to merge with or acquire, and then make the combination happen.

The mergers and acquisitions team (M&A) work with companies wishing to instigate an acquisition, avoid an acquisition, or with two companies wishing to merge.
M&A specialists will also provide advice on the financing of these deals, pricing, and legal implications. They may also provide services that help restructure and reorganise the businesses after the deal has taken place.
Deals valued in excess of $100m are usually facilitated by big investment banks. Smaller deals are dealt with by smaller M&A consultancies, or the by the M&A divisions of the major international accounting firms.
Mergers And Acquisitions Careers
The entry level position for an M&A focused career in investment banking is as an analyst. Junior analysts process a large quantity of information about both parties involved in the merger or acquisition to enable informed decisions to be made, set prices, and agree terms and conditions for the deal. They may also work on marketing documents designed to sell the transaction to shareholders.
After around three years, the analyst may progress to a being an associate. This role will include some responsibility for cultivating relationships. Senior associates tend to have a number of junior analysts working beneath them to support their workload.
With time and experience, the ranks to progress through are vice president, director and managing director.
Usually someone working in M&A will focus on deals within a particular sector, for example specialising in telecoms, media and technology (TMT), general industrials or the energy sector.
