Operations
Financial services operations
Investment banks and other financial service organisations would be unable to function without the support of the operations teams.
Operations professionals have no contact with clients. Instead they work behind the scenes to ensure each transaction passes through smoothly, customer-facing staff are fully supported, and the bank receives all of the income and fees owing to it.
The most obvious activity of the operations team is to clear and settle trades.
Clearing trades means ensuring the records kept by one bank regarding the sale of financial securities correspond with the records kept by the other bank involved in the purchase side of the transaction. This is usually an electronic based process.
Settling trades involves seeing that the securities the banks' traders have bought are exchanged for the agreed amount of money. Settlement professionals match buy and sell instructions with the appropriate counterparties, make arrangements for payments, and monitor the completion of those payments.
Operations jobs
The process of settlement includes everything from sale document preparation, to chasing payments for securities sold. Settlements professionals need to be able to pay attention to detail, have a methodical approach to their work, but also be comfortable interacting with finance professionals from other companies.
Many operations jobs involve interaction with electronic systems used to clear transactions, such as SWIFT, CCASS and Euroclear. Operations professionals needs a thorough working knowledge of these systems so that they are able to identify when the system has failed, and take appropriate intervening action.
Trade support officers work alongside traders to deal with any queries arising from transactions, such as reconciliation issues.
More senior and experienced operations professionals will be involved in the design, creation or improvement of these electronic systems. Project managers will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the system changes.
Advanced operations jobs are strategic in nature, often focused on process improvements and off-shoring opportunities.
