Equity Research Job Roles
Job titles are categorised according the seniority of the role, and the investment it focuses on. An 'analyst' is a junior level role, 'associate' is a mid-level position, and 'manager' denotes a more senior position, often with overall responsibility for a number of more junior analysts or associates.
For example, an equity research analyst is a junior level position, responsible for analysing past trends and the current market for equities.
The roles may be further segregated into sectors, such as retail, energy, pharmaceuticals, technology and real estate.
Role in Financial Services
Equity researchers gain a detailed knowledge of the industry on which they focus, and use this as the basis of 'buy', 'sell' and 'hold' stock recommendations. They develop a professional reputation based on the quality of their recommendations, which dictates how sought after and trusted their reports are.
Traditionally the role was non-client facing, with recommendations communicated to equity salespersons via lengthy written reports. It is more common now for researchers to have direct contact with clients, and be expected to communicate their investment ideas clearly in person.
To eliminate the risk of bias, some investors prefer to rely on the services of an independent researcher. For this reason there is growing demand for financial research professionals within independent consultancies.
Equity Research Careers
For a successful career in equity research you will need to be able to assimilate large quantities of information, draw conclusions, and confidently and succinctly explain your decisions and reasoning.
