As a part of TIAAs Financial Solutions business, TIAA Bank, a division of TIAA, FSB, provides full-service, nationwide banking and lending services to consumer, commercial and institutional clients through a variety of channels, including online, its Florida-based financial centers and at other business offices throughout the country.
The Underwriting Manager is responsible for managing a team of underwriters and overseeing the underwriting production and quality in his/her site. Responsibilities include maintaining credit quality based decisions, monitoring and maintaining daily file distribution to insure proper turn times are met, managing the underwriting staff to address any problems or issues that arise, handling any underwriting issues/problems concerns, and acting as the first point of contact for loan escalation.
The Underwriting Manager serves as a coach and mentor to his/her directs by demonstrating strong communication and relationship building skills. He/she leads the team by coaching and developing staff to higher levels of performance. This position is responsible to build commitment and camaraderie by demonstrating positive leadership, optimism, and professional integrity.
All hiring activities including compensation and performance reviews must be approved by the Chief Credit Officer or his/her designee for associates with delegated authority and their respective managers. Delegated credit authority is at the sole discretion of the Chief Credit Officer or his/her designee.
This position will be an in-office work location in Jacksonville, FL.
Works with upper management to train and direct underwriting staff.
Works with Operations management to ensure smooth flow between Credit, Operations and Sales.
Develops relationships with Operations and Sales to promote a positive and customer centric environment.
Manages quality control issues; provides research, responses, training, and underwriting procedures as findings require.
Monitors underwriting quality on an ongoing basis and assists in determining appropriate credit authority levels.
Provides effective resolution to Underwriting issues and/or problems
Maintains regular communication with the upper management to ensure clear understanding of corporate publications and/or announcements and maintains regular communication to staff.
Develops performance goals for underwriters
Provides training, coaching, and mentoring to increase staff skill sets.
Works effectively with upper management and Operations management on addressing performance issues with both verbal and/or written action.
Completes annual reviews on performance, including loan quality and customer experience qualities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must have thorough knowledge of all FHA, VA, and Conventional investor guidelines and the applicable systems required to perform expected job duties.
Must have the ability to interpret all investor guidelines to make a sound business decision.
Must be an effective communicator - able to discuss issues and/or problems with internal and external business partners to arrive at meaningful resolutions.
Strong ability to lead and manage the staff to meet both turn time and quality requirements.
Must have the ability to recruit and retain skilled underwriters
Must be able to maintain a positive attitude at all times with the ability to motivate and encourage the underwriters to meet their production goals.
Ability to work in a fast paced production environment
Strong analytical skills and ability to make sound business decisions
Strong interpersonal skills; must be an excellent team player.
Strong conflict resolution and problem solving skills
