Job Description
The Commercial Insurance (CI) Regional Manager is responsible for driving profit and growth in the Pacific South Region. The successful candidate will be directly accountable for driving profitable growth through new business production, rate, and retention efforts across four branch offices: Los Angeles, Irvine (Newport Beach) San Diego, and Phoenix, AZ. The book of business is approximately $750MM in gross written premium, with $600MM of P&C premium, $140M of Financial Lines premium, and $8M of Accident and Health premium.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership: Directly manage Commercial Insurance Managers in the Pacific South region, including performance management and compensation, onboarding, training and development, succession planning, inclusion, coaching, mentoring, and retention. Oversee workflows, staffing resources, and application of technology to ensure efficient, cost-effective field operations. Maintain mentoring relationships with top underwriting talent in the region.
- Profit and Loss: Accountable for premium, profitability, growth, rate, and retention across for middle market property and casualty business serviced in the region.
- Portfolio/Line of Business Management: Hold direct P&L responsibility for field business and coordinate agency management and production across the Commercial Insurance product portfolio.
- Marketplace Focus: Identify and develop opportunities aligned to market conditions and agency needs, using tailored approaches to drive results.
- Business Development: Lead both business & premium development activities and provide guidance on sales execution and product launches
- Producer Management: Manage the regional/local producer plant and ensure consistent agency management strategies across assigned locations. Serve as the point person for key local producer relationships and facilitate product education and appetite discussions.
- Marketing Strategy and Execution: Partner with the leadership team and Field Operations to develop and execute marketing strategies across the Commercial Insurance portfolio.
- Underwriting Strategy Execution: Work with Commercial Managers in the region to achieve new and renewal underwriting results.
- Corporate Underwriting Audit: Ensure underwriting quality and maintain satisfactory scores with authority violations below the allowed threshold
- Senior Client Contact: Serve as the primary contact for larger Commercial Insurance clients in the region.
- Expense Administration: Partner with region Commercial Insurance Managers and Home Office to ensure effective expense administration for assigned branches.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Business, Finance, Risk Management, Insurance, Economics, or a related field; MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
- Significant commercial insurance underwriting experience in Property & Casualty, with a strong track record of leadership and business impact.
- Demonstrated enterprise-level P&L ownership for a sizable book of business, with accountability for driving new business production, rate, retention, and profitability.
- Deep expertise in Commercial Insurance products and appetite, with strong technical underwriting leadership and familiarity with underwriting audit, quality, and authority standards.
- Significant experience leading Commercial Insurance Managers, underwriters, and field leaders across a regional or multi-office footprint, including coaching, development, performance management, and succession planning.
- Strong command of middle market underwriting, broker and agency distribution, field operations, and producer management.
- Proven ability to build and sustain strategic relationships with brokers, agents, and key clients, while maintaining a strong market and client focus.
- Advanced marketing, business development, and portfolio management skills, with the ability to shape and execute regional strategies aligned to business goals.
- Strong operational judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance growth, profitability, and execution discipline.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the executive presence to lead across internal and external stakeholders
The pay range for the role is $250,000 to $300,000. The specific offer will depend on an applicant's skills and other factors.
