- Commercially Focused Legal Counsel Role
- Highly Respected, Established Organisation
- Great Culture & Values
- Hands-on In-house Legal role with commercial focus
- Highly respected, established Melbourne Institution
- Broad remit and autonomous role
The Company
Robert Half is proud to be partnering with one of Victoria's most recognisable organisations; operating a diverse commercial business that delivers major events, manages a significant property portfolio and partners with leading corporate, government and community stakeholders.
This is an organisation where no two days are the same. From large-scale commercial agreements and high-profile events, through to partnership matters, intellectual property and dispute management, the Legal Counsel will play a genuine role in enabling the business to achieve its commercial objectives while managing risk.
With a collaborative culture and an emphasis on practical decision-making, this is an opportunity to join a business where legal is viewed as a trusted adviser rather than simply a support or even an impediment to growth.
The Role
Reporting into the Executive Leadership Team, the appointed candidate will provide commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of matters affecting the organisation.
Working closely with executives and leaders across commercial, operations, finance, marketing, HR and procurement, they will become a trusted business partner who provides pragmatic advice that supports commercial outcomes while appropriately managing legal risk.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts and agreements.
- Providing practical legal advice across commercial, contract, consumer, employment and intellectual property matters.
- Supporting the negotiation of customer, supplier and strategic partnership agreements.
- Advising on legal and commercial risk, developing practical mitigation strategies.
- Managing contractual risk throughout the contract lifecycle.
- Maintaining and improving the organisation's suite of template agreements.
- Advising on disputes and managing external legal advisers where specialist expertise is required.
- Working closely with senior stakeholders to support business initiatives and commercial projects.
- Managing external legal spend to ensure value for money.
- Contributing to governance, compliance and continuous improvement initiatives across the legal function.
This is a highly autonomous and generalist in-house role offering excellent variety and the opportunity to become involved in strategic commercial decision-making.
Your Profile
You are a commercially minded lawyer who enjoys partnering with the business and finding practical solutions rather than simply identifying legal issues.
You will likely possess:
- Around 6-10 years' post-admission experience.
- Experience gained within a respected commercial law firm, an in-house legal team, or a combination of both.
- Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and confidence to advise senior leaders.
- Sound knowledge of Australian commercial law, contract law and consumer law.
- Exposure to employment law, intellectual property or dispute management will be advantageous.
- Excellent drafting, communication and negotiation skills.
- A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach with strong commercial judgement.
Most importantly, you will enjoy building relationships across the business and can translate complex legal issues into practical commercial advice.
For the right individual, this is an opportunity to step into a highly varied in-house legal position where you will have exposure to a wide range of commercial matters rather than specialising in a single practice area.
You will benefit from working with a highly impressive yet approachable group of stakeholders, enjoy significant autonomy and become a trusted adviser across a business with diverse operations and an interesting mix of legal challenges.
If you are looking for a role that combines commercial contracting, strategic advice and genuine business partnering in a collaborative environment, this represents an outstanding opportunity.
