Woman leaves Goldman Sachs for one of Google’s hottest Singapore jobs

If you were an associate at Goldman Sachs a few years ago and wanted to quit banking, your preferred option was probably private equity. Now you might want to join Google.

That’s exactly what Singapore-based Swetha Narayanan has done – and she’s landed a senior job at the tech firm in the process.

Narayanan is now a senior strategist within Google’s expanding trust and safety (T&S) team in Singapore, having worked for Goldman since the start of her career in 2014. She was most recently an associate in global investment research technology (analytics), a role in which she built a “research data distribution platform from scratch”, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Narayanan’s move demonstrates Google’s growing ability to poach people at all levels from banks in Singapore. Winter Zhang, for example, spent the first three years of her career as a Goldman software engineer and is now a consultant at the tech giant. Google’s senior banking-sector hires include DBS’s former APAC head of cloud engineering, Carl Bachman Kharazmi.

Moreover, as we reported just last week, Narayanan’s hire provides further evidence that the T&S team at Google is stepping up its hiring in Singapore.

More than 10% of global vacancies at the unit – which is responsible for fighting online abuse in areas such as malware, spam and account hijacking – are based in Singapore. T&S jobs are in demand right now as firms such as Google and Facebook try to restore trust in their services following a torrid 18 months of scandals in the tech industry.

Ex-Goldmanite Narayanan has a data analytics focused role and is tasked with ensuring publisher quality, managing risk, and preventing fraud and abuse using data science and machine learning, according to her profile.

T&S at Google in Singapore wants to take on more people with data skills. A current analyst job vacancy, for example, demands experience in working with statistical packages (e.g. Stata, Matlab), using SQL for large datasets, and developing machine learning models.

The diverse T&S team also includes professionals such as policy specialists, engineers, and program managers.
