An electronic trading MD is creating visors for COVID-19 medics

A managing director in electronic trading in London is helping NHS doctors working on the frontline of COVID-19.

Nej D’jelal, managing director and head of electronic equities at a UK bank in London, co-founded the charity Heroes alongside NHS workers including Dr. Dominic Pimenta, a cardiology registrar and author. After raising over £300k in funding since its launch on 18 March (with donations still accepted here), Heroes has purchased 50 3D printers to create visors for use by medics on the front line.

The initiative comes as hospitals and care homes across the country are running out of personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks and visors for use by staff dealing with patients infected with the virus.

“3D printers are latest step,” says D’jelal. “We have access to a few at the moment but following the recent acquisition we expect to print thousands of visors next week. We're in touch with a few GPs and hospitals who are in desperate need.”

Pimenta, says: “We are dedicated to a single ideal, ‘anything that makes an NHS worker's life better.”

Alongside PPE, Heroes provides food drops for NHS staff if needed, as well as counselling, and emergency childcare. Supported by a band of volunteers and ambassadors like former England footballer Joe Cole and cricketer Sam Curran, Heroes has received donations from both individuals and corporations.

Donations to the charity are still open and ongoing. D’jelal says plenty of people in finance have already given money.
