Hong Kong fintech to hire in Singapore as it doubles headcount

Hong Kong-based fintech Apoidea Group is launching an office in Singapore and plans to double its global workforce this year, says co-founder and COO Justin Chiu.

“2020 was a very fruitful year for the team in terms of headcount – the number of full-time staff has doubled in the past 12 months,” says Chiu, without providing exact figures. There are currently 47 Apoidea employees who have public profiles on LinkedIn. “In 2021, we expect to double the full-time headcount again, and launch overseas offices in Australia, Singapore and Japan,” he adds.

Apoidea is an AI-driven financial media company that uses machine learning to process financial information – including from annual reports and social media – which it then offers to financial institutions. Apoidea Group also operates Altive, an investment platform that leverages AI to help alternative asset managers coordinate and distribute to private banks, family offices and wealth managers.

Since late last year Apoidea has opened seven new positions across job functions such as legal and compliance, product structuring, public relations and employee benefits, says Chiu, who left his job as an assistant underwriting manager at Zurich Insurance to launch the startup in 2017. To help meet rising customer demand in 2021, Apoidea is also recruiting business development  professionals and technologists, such as developers, DevOps engineers and data scientists.

Some of this hiring won’t be entirely straightforward. “Unlike accountants or computer engineers, we can hardly find seasoned data scientists with technical know-how in the market, because data science and machine learning have only been emerging for a while. It’s even harder to find experts in natural language processing because the breakthrough of such technology has only come in the past few years,” says Chiu.

Apoidea is making “extra efforts” to find candidates for these jobs. “We’ve been hiring from overseas and this number is expected to continue growing. We’ve also been establishing our network with universities to engage current students in our talent pool,” says Chiu.

In Q2, Apoidea will be moving to a new Hong Kong headquarters in the InnoCentre in Kowloon Tong, which is three times larger than its current office and has a usable floor area of more than 10,000 sq feet.
