OCBC has made a major addition to its data team in Singapore. Ban Horng Tan has joined the bank as head of data platform solutions.
Tan is now tasked with leading the “agile transformation of data platform solutions”, according to his LinkedIn profile.
His hire follows OCBC’s announcement in March that it is recruiting 1,500 technology staff over the next three years, mostly based in Singapore, including data specialists.
Tan previously spent more than three years at NCS Group, a technology services firm, latterly as a practice lead for big data and data platforms.
He spent the bulk of his career at Accenture, which he joined as a contractor in 2002 and where he was most recently a digital applied intelligence solution architect and delivery lead.
Senior data specialists like Tan are in high demand in Singapore financial services. Local banks UOB and DBS are hiring in data engineering, data science, data analytics, and data management, as are the likes of Citi and Standard Chartered. But they face strong competition for talent from big tech firms including Grab, Google and Amazon.
Data professionals with 5 - 8 years’ experience can expect annual salaries of S$72k - S$120k. Those with 9 - 15 years on the job can earn between S$120k - S$180k, while those with 15 years and more receive offers of S$250k and above, according to the latest Selby Jennings pay data.
