A HSBC banking MD in London has escaped to Goldman Sachs

Since HSBC announced the closure of its M&A and ECM teams in Europe and the US, senior bankers have been heading for the lifeboats. While Financial News notes that these dealmakers have often been pretty desperate for a new home, many have landed on their feet, including an M&A managing director (MD) that recently arrived at Goldman Sachs.

Charles-Antoine de Chatillon has joined Goldman in London as an MD in its EMEA logistics and shipping team within its industrials group. He spent the last 15 years at HSBC, where he led coverage for the UK bank's transport and logistics team. De Chatillon spent most of his HSBC career in London after a few years as a junior in Paris, and was promoted to MD back in 2023 while working in the bank's transport, services and logistics team.

He appears to be Goldman's first foray into the cut-price HSBC bankers available as the team winds down; Citi has reportedly had the biggest appetite, bringing in four senior figures from the M&A and ECM teams including its global head of ECM Ed Sankey. Other banks, including JPMorgan, Moelis & Co and Deutsche Bank, have each hired more than one big name from HSBC.

Joining Goldman Sachs in London can be a lucrative move. Its London subsidiary paid 305 employees more than €1 (£869k), 25 of whom earned more than €5 (£4.34m).
