Citi's head of culture and behavioural insights has left for HSBC

Citi wants its culture to foster champions. It'll have to do so without one of the senior women tasked with improving that culture.

Anna Koczwara, an MD at Citi and its head of cultural and behavioural insights, has left to join HSBC in London. She arrived this week as its global head of behavioural science and research. Now-closed job listings in Citi's behavioural insights team say the division is tasked with "improv[ing Citi's] working environment, engagement levels, satisfaction, and intent to stay."

Koczwara, a psychological safety advocate, was only at Citi for a year and a half. Before that, she spent seven years at RBS in London, where she was head of strategic capability and assessment.

HSBC's behavioural science team was first led by David Grosse, who joined HSBC in 2017 and left in 2022. He led a team of four according to Reuters, but the team appears to have shown little growth since he left; Koczwara's arrival may be an attempt to revitalize it. The bank was also seen hiring for a behavioural scientist to work with its employee listening and dialogue team last month.

Grosse was different to other behavioural science leaders in that he had a banking risk background. Koczwara has a more standard background with a PhD in psychology. For her thesis, she interviewed 40 managers in banking and finance to assess their bias in evaluating the potential of male and female talent.
