JPMorgan hired a new cybersecurity chief from Goldman Sachs' investment bank

Multiple banks have been recruiting senior cybersecurity specialists as technologies like AI make cyberattacks much more powerful. Bank of America hired an ex-US Secret Service investigator, while HSBC hired a former UK Home Office technology director. JPMorgan, meanwhile, hired a new chief information security officer from Goldman Sachs.

Dr Stephen Johnson announced on LinkedIn that he is joining JPMorgan in New York as a managing director and a chief information security officer (CISO). It's not clear whether his role is global or divisional, and JPMorgan didn't respond to a request for comment. Johnson spent the last six years at Goldman Sachs, where he was CISO for its global investment banking and markets division. He appears to have been promoted to MD in 2023.

Johnson held a number of other roles in banks. He was a director of cybersecurity at Santander, and a director of technology risk and cybersecurity at Deutsche Bank. He claims to have been very hands-on in his role and logged "over 10,000 digital forensic investigation field hours," equivalent to over 400 full days.

Johnson isn't the only new technology MD arriving at JPMorgan. Dave Temkin announced he was joining the bank as its global head of networks earlier this month, and started in the role this week. He joined from Walmart, where he ran infrastructure and critical facilities technology. He was a technology leader at Netflix as it became an industry titan, founding and leading "the team responsible for network, systems, and storage."
