Stripe raised headcount and salaries in London last year despite layoffs

Payments giant Stripe has big plans for London. 2025 accounts released for the fintech show that headcount grew significantly over last year; average salaries increased too, but total compensation fell.

Stripe increased its headcount from 288 in 2024 to 340 last year. This is despite the fact that the fintech cut ~3.5% of its global workforce (roughly 300 people) at the start of the year. The fintech opened a new London office in 2024; John Collison told Bloomberg at the time that it has space for 250 employees, suggesting that much of Stripe's UK headcount might work remotely.

Headcount in the UK entity grew by 18%, slightly above the 17% headcount growth that chief people officer Rob McIntosh said that Stripe was aiming for in 2025. The growth was split almost evenly between its administration, sales and engineering divisions. Headcount in user operations slightly fell.

Average total compensation was £247.5k. It was down year on year due to a ~28% decrease in 'other compensation', which includes equity pay. At the same time, 'salaries and wages' increased from £168k to £181k. The number of people who received bonuses last year also slightly decreased, which may have affected average total compensation.

The London office is a fraction of the size of Stripe's Dublin headquarters. The Irish Times reported last week that Stripe's Dublin headcount has increased by more than 35% this year after tripling its office size in 2025.
