Morgan Stanley brought in an interesting new technologist, in Dallas
It’s easy for a bank to talk about its investments and interest in AI. They do it all the time. It’s quite another for a bank to go out, put its money where its mouth is, and hire some people to make its AI talk an AI reality.

Waseem Amer joined Morgan Stanley as a managing director (MD) in Dallas this month as a “transformation leader at the forefront of AI banking revolution.” He joined the bank from Goldman Sachs, where he was a senior vice president in cybersecurity in the bank’s Dallas office. Amer spent just three years at Goldman, which he joined from Citi.
Amer has had an interesting career. Before his time at Citi, he worked in operations, including at Barclays and at Swiss pharmaceutical firm Alcon. It isn’t clear how or why he decided to change to cybersecurity, and Morgan Stanley didn’t respond to our request for comment.
AI and cybersecurity are increasingly going hand in hand. October, which isn't over yet, has already been dubbed “Black October” by the technology community, after a sudden rise in the discovery of serious security flaws. The surge is down to the rapidly increasing capabilities of AI. Perhaps Amer isn't really changing fields at all.
Amer’s role at Morgan Stanley in Dallas is somewhat foundational. The bank announced its presence in the city fairly recently, with it aiming for 3,800 roles in the city by the end of 2035. Morgan Stanley has committed around $684m to the city so far.
Morgan Stanley has been a pretty open supporter of AI for a pretty long time. It has had a partnership with OpenAI since 2023, when GPT-4 was all the rage. It’s still going strong now, with GPT-6 powering ChatGPT for Financial Services. Maybe that relationship is why Morgan Stanley didn’t take a lead left role in SpaceX’s IPO – or Anthropic’s. Maybe not.
